Why Treatment Is Better Than Hiding Toenail Fungus

Most peoples reaction to an ailment that gives an unappealing look is to try and hide it or cover it up. This was my strategy for over 5 years of having fungus. But, at Toe Fungus Journey, we believe in treating the underlying problem and not the symptoms.

The fungus is a stubborn infection that requires constant attention and care. Also, fungus typically spreads quickly to other toes and even your skin.

Acrylic nails are basically a roadblock that will prevent healing and even promote the growth and spread of your fungal infection. This is why treatment is so important because it will actively treat your ailment.

It is important not to just follow any treatment you find online because like anything in life, there is the good, the bad, and the best. There are some treatments out there that work on managing symptoms and not the underlying problem.

If you are applying creams and ointments to your nails then you are on the right track. This is the first step to getting your nails functions, form, and looks back. Treatments typically work by neutralizing the harmful effects of fungi or killing the fungi causing the infection.

The best approach you can have when it comes to an unsightly and discolored nail is to have patience and be consistent with your treatment. This is obviously a challenge when you are wanting to get your nails back to normal as quickly as possible. But if you truly want to get your nails back quickly then start today.

Sizing Up Risk Factors

People who have chronic athletes foot are at risk for developing toenail fungus, and there seems to be a genetic predisposition. Sometimes the fungus gets into the nail bed after the nail was cracked or cut too short. The fungus also lurks in shared showers, around pools and a lot of Vlahovics patients tell her their troubles started after getting a pedicure.

The very place where people go to beautify their feet and toenails is often responsible for spreading disease, says Tennessee podiatrist Dr. Robert Spalding. He has written a book called Death by Pedicure and has been on a decade-long crusade to make nail salons safer.

They use contaminated instruments, in some cases, or they dont take the time to properly disinfect and follow their state protocols, Spalding said. Nail fungus and other microorganisms are really tough to kill, and Spalding says the only sure-fire way to sterilize the instruments is to use something called an autoclave.

An autoclave is basically a pressure cooker, he said. Its steam under pressure, for a certain amount of time. Its how instruments are cleaned for surgery.

The foot-soaking tubs are another cesspool of infection that Spalding says some salons are eliminating. Now they are going to tubs that have liners. They dont use the jets as much. And they are coming up with something called a dry pedicure, where they just take hot towels and soak the feet, Spalding said.

Promising review: “So this one time like maybe a year and a half ago my buddies and I were on a trip to Mexico and ended up getting lost in the rainforest like a bunch of idiots. Long story short, I had to hike about 30 miles in wet boots in hot, humid weather. Among a host of other issues, I got athlete’s foot. Fast-forward like a year…my feet are still itchy and it’s bad. Like, skin cracking and falling off bad. Eventually I tried this and a month later, I’m cured. 10/10 would recommend unless you hate your toes.” Sam

What Really Is Onychomycosis Or Foot Fungus

How to Get Rid of Toenail Fungus Fast at Home

Onychomycosis is the word that defines the fungal infection of your toenails, which usually begins in one of the big toes, with the risk of spreading to the others.

It is very common, not too serious, but it can become a serious problem if it is not treated in time and effectively.

This type of fungus parasites the skin and nails and can be destroying the tissue. Therefore, we are not dealing with a purely aesthetic question.

It is also an infection that may be latent, that is, having the infection asleep until the ideal conditions for them to develop are present and that is when the infection is visibly displayed.

Finally, tell you that Onychomycosis is something very contagious and, in addition, in a very simple way.

That is why prevention is so important and knowing what I have to do to prevent fungal nail infection, which will be precisely the central topic that we will cover in this article.

But now we are going to see why these fungi appear and how to eliminate them once we have detected them.

In half of all suspected cases, there is no fungal infection, just a nail deformity. This is the reason why a proper diagnosis must be conducted to confirm the infection before any treatment is plan is started.

Treatment of oral anti-fungal therapy is usually performed on infected individuals and can have side effects when used on people without infection.

Most treatment involves the use of topical or oral antifungal medications. Some of the oral anti-fungal medications include terbinafine and itraconazole. Topical agents are the nail paints and need to be applied daily for prolonged periods.

Prevention of Toenail Fungus

We value this saying, prevention is better than cure. While there are certain cases where toenail fungus cannot be prevented, there are also cases where the infection can be prevented. Below are some tips that can help:

  • Wash hands and feet regularly with soap and water.
  • Dry thoroughly, including between toenails.
  • Keep your nails as short as possible.
  • Wear shoes that reduce humidity.
  • Use anti-fungal spray on your feet and inside of your shoes.
  • Avoid walking barefooted, especially in public places.

  • Avoid using other peoples nail cutters, nail files, and other tools. This can transfer the fungus from one person to another.

Healthy Habits To Prevent Toenail Fungus

Warm, sweaty feet are a breeding ground for a toenail fungal infection. Find out how you can sidestep this threat and keep your feet healthy.

Preventing toenail fungus may not be at the top of your to-do list, but perhaps it should be. Fungi are nearly everywhere in our environment, and they particularly love dark, moist, warm places, like inside your shoes. That makes it relatively easy to stumble upon a toenail fungal infection .

As many as half of all nail disorders are due to toenail fungal infection, and the condition affects about 14 percent of the population, according to a study published in the July 2014 issue of The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.

How Toenail Fungal Infections Develop

Toenail fungal infections are most often caused by microscopic organisms called dermatophytes. These organisms feed on keratin, the protein found in nails and hair.

There are several factors that increase your risk of developing a toenail fungal infection. Most people contract toenail fungus from a fungal skin infection such as athletes foot that transfers to the nail, says Jane E. Andersen, DPM, a podiatrist at Chapel Hill Foot and Ankle Associates in North Carolina and a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association. The wrong footwear can also take a toll on your toes. If toenails are traumatized by pressure from ill-fitting shoes, for instance, theyre weakened and more susceptible to fungus, she says.

  • Trim your nails down as far as they go, so that the soak penetrates deep into the nail bed.
  • Mix one part vinegar to one part water.
  • Soak for 30 minutes then dry thoroughly.
  • Repeat twice a day for a few weeks to clear up toenail fungus.

What Are The Symptoms

The first sign of a fungal infection is the nail turning white, yellow, green or even black. The infection generally starts at the tip and works its way down the side of the nail toward the cuticle.

Your nail may become very thick, difficult to trim and crumbly. Big toenails are the most common victims and can be painful to touch as time goes on.

The surrounding skin can develop an infection so it may be itchy, swollen or appear white and cracked, particularly between the toes.

If the infection is left untreated, it can develop into cellulitis or a bone infection.

So its best to see your doctor for a piece of your nail to be analysed. Culture tests determine which fungus is causing the infection and the appropriate treatment.

The better alternative to hiding toenail fungus is to find the best products that treat toenail fungus quickly. Some of the most common treatments include OTC ointments, essential oils, homemade foot soaks, and prescription drugs.

One of the best things to do is to pair supplements that will promote skin and nail growth with a proven treatment. I have an article where I reviewed some of the best products on the market for treating nail fungus.

Once you get your preferred remedy, it is recommended to give yourself a pedicure. Be sure to wear gloves or wash them after you perform the pedicure. The last thing you will want to do is to spread the fungi around to other nails or parts of your body.

After trimming your toenails properly, prepare an anti-fungal foot soak. Be sure to dry your feet properly after and then apply the product you chose to treat your nail fungus.

Preventing Toenail Fungus For Healthy Attractive Summer Feet

    posted: Nov. 01, 2016.

Toenail fungus affects nearly 20 percent of the population and is one of the most common foot conditions that is treated by your podiatrist. Characterized by thick, disfigured, yellow nails, this recurring disorder can cause the nail to grow fragile, brittle and loose, and, in some cases, to crumble away. In the most severe cases, infected nails may even cause pain or difficulty walking.

Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments and can spread from person to person. Like athletes foot, you can contract a fungal nail infection from simply walking barefoot in public showers or pools or by sharing nail clippers or shoes. Fungal infections can also infect fingernails, but toenails are more difficult to treat as toenails typically grow more slowly. By following simple preventive measures from your podiatrist, you can take the next step to healthy, attractive feet.

How Can You Hide Toenail Fungus

If youre trying to hide toenail fungus, its probably not in your best interest to do so. Why? Covering up the problem only allows it to get worse.

However, in the event you feel as though a cover up is something you need to do, here are a few suggestions.

Its important to remember that once the fungus is killed off, by whichever method you choose, your affected nail or nails need to grow out completely before they appear clear and healthy again.
