Why Are There Gnats In My Bag Of Potting Soil
You may find fungus gnats in your newly opened bag of soil because theyre attracted to the micronutrients found in soil.
They may fly right out of the bag as soon as you open it, or you may start planting the soil and youll come across them buried within the mix.
The gnats are feasting on the organic matter commonly found in soil, such as manure, guano, fertilizer, mulch, clippings, plant matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, etc.
They may have found their way into the bag during any part of the soils production.
This means the gnats couldve infested the bag from the factory or production plant, farm where it was harvested, or even during transport on a trailer or within a storage warehouse.
Rips, tears, and other damaged soil bags can make way for adult fungus gnats to find their way through the packaging and start depositing eggs.
This brings up another important point- you should NEVER buy discounted soil because of this exact reason. Some department or hardware stores mark down their damaged soils because of lost product or damaged packaging.
This is just asking for a pest problem to infest your yard. The money you save is not worth the trouble of getting rid of a bug problem once you bring them into your yard. Dont risk it for a few dollars.
Eggs Were Already Into The Soil
One of the most common indoor gardening mistakes is to use outdoor gardening soil. This is because of the presence of pests, and, among them, fungus gnats are quite common.

What Kind Of Mushroom Are They

The majority of the mushrooms that you see growing in your potting soil are Leucocoprinus birnbaumii, formerly named Lepiota lutea, which are small and varying shades of yellow. You may first notice small bright yellow little balls in the soil, which, as the cap expands to release the white spores, they will become a much paler color. How To Prevent The Growth Of Fungus In The Soil
To prevent your garden from fungus, you should follow these steps carefully.
Step 1.
Stop fertilizing: Excessive use of fertilizer is the main cause of quick fungal growth. Fertilizer can act as a source of nutrients for the fungal spores.
Step 2.
Properly dry and decompose the organic fertilizer. Use of organic fertilizers is best for your garden, but if it is not properly decomposed then it will increase fungal growth in the soil.
Other than that, further decomposition will reduce the nitrogen present in the soil- resulting in wilting of plants.
Step 3.
Stop Overwatering: too much of water is the primary source of fungal growth. Water only when necessary, dont overwater and never make the soil soggy.

Remove Or Scrape It Off
The first method Ive tried is to remove the mushrooms as they pop up and thus reducing the chances of them resporing.
With the dog vomit slime, I scrape off the top 2 inches, since mature fuligo septica only grows one inch in thickness.
I am usually extremely careful when I scrape off the mold or remove the mushrooms as I dont want any of the spores to contaminate my soil and grow again.
Since Im sensitive to spores, I also ensure I use gloves before touching any kind of fungi or mold.
Getting Rid Of Yellow Soil Fungus
It isnt always easy to get rid of yellow slime mold or mushrooms, but Ill share my best tips with you.
But first, I know I dont like the sight of yellow mushrooms popping up and growing next to my houseplants however, they can improve the quality of your plants soil as they are a sign that the soil is healthy.
This being said, if the mushrooms are popping up because you are overwatering, then it may be best to get rid of them.

What Do Fungus Gnats Eat
Fungus gnats primarily eat the many nutrients found in soil.
This is why you may find a bunch of larvae when you open a new bag of potting soil or garden soil. Because the soil contains many organic nutrients, the fungus gnats have plenty of food as they evolve into adult gnats.
These gnats will feed on a variety of things found in potting mix, garden mix, potting soil, and garden soil:
- Grass clippings
- Other fungi
- Manure
These decaying organics will provide plenty of food for fungus gnats. And many soils will have a mix of these by default when you buy it from the store.

So, it makes sense to get rid of the mold and then resolve the underlying problem to prevent soil mold returning.

Unfortunately, the conditions that are ideal for mushrooms are also ideal for most houseplants, so by changing the conditions you may harm the houseplant itself.
