How To File Down Toenail Fungus

Remedies And Treatments For Thick Yellow Toenails

GRINDING DOWN THICK DAMAGED TOENAILS

Itâs common for yeasts, molds, and other fungi can enter toenails and cause infection. Itâs important to practice habits that prevent toenail infection and reinfection.

The following measures can help you prevent thick yellow toenails caused by infection:

  • Wear sweat-absorbing socks to prevent fungi from forming in the fabric.
  • Wear shoes in pool areas and locker rooms where you could come in contact with nail fungus.
  • Shoes offer a dark, moist environment that helps fungi grow. Treat old shoes with antifungal powders or disinfectants.
  • Wash your hands and feet regularly. Fungal infections are more common in toenails since your feet are in warm, moist environments more often.
  • Trim your toenails and smooth the edges with a file. This will make it easier for topical treatments to reach deeper layers of the nail.

Topical treatments administer antifungal agents on your toenails to stop fungal growth. A healthy toenail can then grow back. It takes time for thick yellow toenail treatments to work. You may not see results for months.

Thoughts On Toenail Fungus

  • I have toe fungus on just my left foot. Try to explain that! Anyways, I stubbed my big left toe and the nail fell off. I am waiting to see if the fungus comes back. Obviously, pulling off toenails is not a solution.

  • I SUFFER FROM THAT TOO!!!BOTH FEET! :O(

IM SORRY, WELCOME TO THE CLUB!!!

  • I used to have toenail fungus really badlylike I couldnt wear closed shoes. Luckily I live in CA so I can wear Tevas year round. But it went away with heavy wine drinking, so good luck. Now I just have to figure out how to stop drinking.

  • Dear Jesus I have that too. I have it only on my big toe on my right foot. I was told by the dr. that I got it from a nail salon they dont sterilize the instruments enough. It is yellow and no amount of medicine can cure it. It is rivaled only by my psoriasis that I painfully camouflage with long sleeves all winter long which also does not disappear with all the topical creams that are applied every day sometimes two or three times a day. I feel your pain sistah!

  • Toenail Fungus: Causes And Risk Factors

Toenail fungus is a fungal infection in the toenail. It happens when a fungus anything from mold to yeast to other types of fungus gets in the nail bed from a cut or break in the nail or repetitive trauma to the nail, and penetrates the nail itself, says Dr. Sundling. The nail then continues to grow with the fungus. Once a nail plate is infected with fungus, it will never not be infected, and you must wait to see how it grows out and whether the new nail growing behind it is healthy. The new nail rarely grows in healthy without treatment, says Sundling.

Toenail fungus is very common 14 percent of people have it in North America, according to an article published in the journal PLoS Pathogens and its more common the older you get, adds Sundling. Wearing shoes that are too small can damage the nail and make it more vulnerable to fungus, as can having a fungal infection on the skin of the foot and not treating it, which could expose the nail to fungus. You may be more at risk to toenail fungus if you have diabetes, or a weaker immune system.

    Toenail Fungus Home Care

Sometimes itâs possible to treat your toenail fungus at home. You can try:

    • Over the counter antifungal creams or ointments. File or cut off any white markings on your nails. Soak your nails in water and dry off before you put on the medicated cream.
    • Special nail care. If you keep your nails trimmed, it can reduce the pressure and pain you feel. You can also thin your nail bed by filing it down. This can help antifungal creams get to the problem easier.

What Causes Toenail Fungus Under The Nails

Can You Cut Away Nail Fungus

Toenail infections, like other infections, are caused by tiny microscopic organisms living where theyre not supposed to be. In the case of toenails, these organisms are often fungi, like yeasts and molds. These invaders can live in the layer of dead skin cells around and underneath your toenails.

Toenail fungus is contagious and you can get it from being exposed to others infections. These yeasts and molds are present everywhere in the environment, but tend to grow and flourish in warm, moist places like community pools, gyms, and change rooms.

Your risk of getting the toenail infection increases if you:

    • spend time in a warm, moist climate or wear sweaty shoes,
    • wear shoes that are too tight or have metal toe-caps that may cause tiny injuries to the toenails,
    • have health issues , or even from
    • increasing age.

If you think you have toenail fungus under your nails, reach out to me or your health care provider to get an accurate diagnosis. Before treating it, you want to be sure if the reason for your unsightly toenails is, in fact, fungus under your nails . You dont want to let a fungal infection go too far, as not treating it can lead to further complications.

    Why Do Fungal Nails Develop

Aging is the most common cause of fungal nails, due to reduced blood circulation, more chance of exposure to fungi over time, and nails which grow slower and become thicker, increasing the likelihood of infection. However, it is important to note aging alone can also cause nails to discolour and become thicker.

    When To See A Doctor

People with mild symptoms of fungal infection may treat their toenails at home. But infections can lead to more serious problems, such as foot ulcers, in people with diabetes. Poor blood flow can keep infections from healing.

If your toenails continue becoming discolored, thicker, or deformed despite treatments, itâs a good idea to see a doctor. Make an appointment with your doctor if you have diabetes, as toenail fungus can lead to more serious infections and diabetic foot problems. Itâs possible that your thick yellow toenails are caused by conditions such as psoriasis, a skin disease.

Doctors can better diagnose the cause of your thick yellow toenails by collecting and analyzing nail clippings. They can then prescribe a treatment plan. Treatments may include prescription medicines you can take by mouth or removal of the damaged nail.

Keep Your Fungal Nail Trimming Equipment Separate

DIY at Home How To Make Your Thick Toenails Look BETTER!!! Cutting of Thick Toenails

Nail clippers and other equipment that comes in contact with fungal areas are not objects that should be used anywhere else, or for anyone else. Doing so invites a greater chance for a fungus to be carried from one set of nails to another.

This is not just a warning against sharing toenail trimmers between family members you should also not use that set of trimmers on your fingernails, either! It is quite possible for a fungal infection to be transferred from toenails to fingernails, and you cant exactly hide the latter in a pair of socks all day.

Similarly, only use proper trimming equipment on your toes. Using smaller fingernail clippers not only increases the risk of transferring the fungus if you slip up, they are likely also not going to work very well.

It is also wise to regularly disinfect your equipment, just in case. A soak of a few minutes in rubbing alcohol or diluted bleach will do the trickjust make sure to completely dry any metal parts to avoid rusting. Also make sure all nail debris and matter is cleaned off.

    Keep The Dermatophytes Away

Onychomycosis is highly contagious and difficult to treat. Prevent a fungal infection by protecting your feet in public or shared spaces. Wear flip-flops or beach sandals in the following spaces:

    • Gym
    • Sauna
    • Steam room

Dermatophytes love warm, moist environments, so be sure to wash your feet daily and towel them dry thoroughly. Also dry your feet including between the toes when you get out of the pool, ocean, or shower.

You can use foot powders on the tops of your toes, in the toe webs, and on your soles to absorb excess moisture. Always wear clean socks and change them at least daily .

Keep your toenails trimmed short and straight. Gently file down sharp edges that could wound your nail bed, making it more susceptible to infection. Make sure you disinfect your nail clippers after each use, and only entrust your toenails to nail salons that disinfect all their tools between customers.

Other tips to reduce your risk of onychomycosis include wearing footwear thats made of breathable, natural materials that give your toes plenty of space. Choose socks made of cotton or a wickable material that keeps them dry.

    What Is Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a condition that disfigures and sometimes destroys the nail. It is also called onychomycosis

Toenail fungus can be caused by several different types of fungi. Fungi are microscopic organisms related to mold and mildew.

These fungi thrive in the dark, moist and stuffy environment inside shoes. As they grow, fungi feed on keratin. Keratin is the protein that makes up the hard surface of the toenails.

Factors that increase the risk of developing toenail fungus include:

    • Wearing tight-fitting shoes or tight hosiery
    • Practicing poor foot hygiene
    • Wearing layers of toenail polish, which doesn’t allow the nail to breathe
    • Being a military personnel, athlete or miner. This is because toenail fungi may spread from foot to foot on the floors of showers and locker rooms.
    • Having a chronic illness, such as diabetes
    • Having a circulatory problem that decreases blood flow to the toes

However, many people with toenail fungus have no clear risk factors.

Toenails on the big toe and little toe are the most likely to develop a toenail fungus. This may be partly because the big toe and little toe are constantly exposed to friction from the sides of shoes.

In the most serious instances of toenail fungus infection, the toenail may be removed surgically or dissolved with acid. This can be done to just a portion of the nail in the hope that the remaining nail will grow back healthy. In cases where the entire toenail has to be removed, artificial nails and products using light-cured resins to form a temporary covering can be used to protect the underlying tissue until the nail grows back.

If you prefer to go the home-remedy route, such as applying tea tree oil or Vicks VapoRub to your nails, keep in mind that the effectiveness of these products for treating toenail fungus hasn’t been well studied, and they are not recommended by podiatrists.

Finally, the Food and Drug Administration has approved several laser devices for temporary increase in clear nails in patients with onychomycosis. But while laser treatments are vigorously marketed, clinical trials of lasers have reported mixed results, and the treatments may not be covered by health insurance. If you wish to try laser treatment of toenail fungus, speak to your doctor about what to expect from the treatment, and call your insurance carrier to find out whether the treatment will be covered.

Its known as athletes foot because athletes or anyone who is more active and sweats a lot is more at risk. Kids are also more at risk, because they dont tend to wear different shoes, and changing your shoes is one way to avoid foot fungus.

Foot fungus is very common. It does not mean that someone is dirty or didnt bathe, and if you have a compromised immune system, you may be more susceptible, says Sundling.
