What Is Neem Oil
Neem oil comes from the seeds and fruits of the Azadirachta indica tree. The color varies from golden yellow, yellow-brown, bright red, reddish-brown, greenish-brown, to dark brown. It has an unpleasant odor and a bitter taste.
The beneficial agents in neem oil are triglycerides, triterpenoid compounds, antioxidants, vitamin C, beta-carotene, and several sterols. Azadirachtin and Nimbin are the best-known triterpenoid compounds in neem oil and give it many of its beneficial properties.
The oil is cold pressed from seeds or removed through a controlled warm-press process. A solvent extraction yields the same result. If youre purchasing oil for use on humans or pets, pressed oil is best, since you want to avoid solvent residues.
Hplc Analyses And Chromatographic Separation Of Nimonol
The HPLC diagram of the highly active organic extract showed ten well defined chromatographic peaks . These peaks were eluted at different retention time . The first peak was eluted after 9 min. and contained three Azadirachtins at ratios of 7%, 5% and 8%, respectively. The third peak was evident at rt of 22 min and contained the azadirachtins A, B, D, H and I at ratios of 11%, 10%, 4%, 9%, and 7%, respectively. The 4th Peak was eluted after 34 min and was identified as 6 de-acetyl nimbin of 39 % purity. The peaks no. 2 and 5 yielded very small amounts of non-pure material and were not enough for accurate identification. Peak no. 6 was eluted at 54 min and contained mainly the azadiradione whereas at 63 min, peak no. 7 was eluted and contained the nimonol with the highest purity level , followed by peak no. 8 at 68.6 min which contained the epoxyazadiradione as a major constituent . The last two peaks were eluted after 76 and 90 min, respectively and contained also small amounts of non-pure materials especially the last one which seems containing at least three components .
You Can Use It To Control Insects At All Stages Of Development
Neem oil kills insects at all stages of development adult, larvae and egg. The active chemical in neem oil, azadirachtin, gets rid of insects in a few different ways:

Azadirachtin will force the insect or pest to stop eating the leaves.
When insects come into contact with neem oil, it also prevents the bug from transforming into its next stage of development by disrupting regulatory hormones.

Tea Tree Oil For Toenail Fungus
Tea tree oil is unlikely to fully cure a well-established toenail fungus infection, since the infection tends to be based in the nail matrix, or root, underneath the nail fold , Krant says. But prescription drugs for toenail fungus are not always effective. Topical prescription creams and liquids work about 10 to 15 percent of the time when used over many months on true toenail fungus, says Krant.
Tea tree oil may have a similar rate of effectiveness: A study published in the Journal of Family Practice in 1994 comparing tea tree oil with clotrimazole, a common antifungal medication, found that the two treatments were almost equally successful in treating the condition.

Tea tree oil may be effective for milder cases of athlete’s foot, says Jessica J. Krant, M.D., M.P.H., clinical assistant professor of dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., and a member of Consumer Reports medical advisory board. Thats because it is known to be antiseptic, mildly antifungal, and mildly antibacterial, she says.
In fact, a study published in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology in 2002 found that twice-daily use of a 25 or 50 percent tea tree solution for four weeks cleared up athletes foot for more than half the people who used italthough nearly four percent of study participants who used the tea tree oil solution also developed an itchy rash.
While these results seem encouraging, theres no guarantee that consumers will get the same results from the tea tree oil products they buy. Thats because study researchers use ingredients that are purified and analyzed to ensure that they contain exact concentrations of high-quality tea tree oil. But tea tree oil products arent regulated in the way that medications are, so theres no way to be sure that a product from the drugstore contains the ingredients that will have the desired effect, says Krant.
Its also important to note that other studies have found tea tree oil to be less effective at treating athletes foot than over-the-counter antifungal medications such as tolnaftate .
