Old Problem In A Young Patient: TREATING AND TRIMMING TOENAIL FUNGUS

The newer drugs are unlikely to cause any liver problems in patients without known liver disease. Blood tests are not needed for once-weekly treatment with fluconazole however, people taking longer courses often have their liver function tested before starting the medicine and then retested during the course of treatment. It is important to notify the doctor of all side effects while on the medication. You should tell your doctor of all current medications to prevent potential serious drug interactions.

Clinical Management Of Treated Patients

Although low, the possibility exists of hepatic injury during therapy with the newer antifungal agents, and it should remain a consideration. Liver function tests at baseline and periodically during therapy should be performed for patients receiving continuous therapy with terbinafine, fluconazole, or itraconazole. Patients receiving terbinafine are also advised to undergo baseline and periodic complete blood counts as well. Pulse therapy with itraconazole does not require laboratory monitoring. The recommendations for intermittent therapy with fluconazole are unknown. In all cases, patients should be educated so that they can recognize and report signs of drug-related adverse reactions, including jaundice, upper abdominal tenderness, malaise, dark urine, pale stools, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.

Stages Of The Disease

The disease occurs in four stages. The earlier you start treatment, the more likely you are to get rid of nail fungus forever.

The first stage is characterized by damage to the edge of the nail. As mentioned above, the color of the plate changes, bulges appear. The nail grows poor quality, hollow and therefore breaks and crumbles.

The increase in the area of the lesion will become a sign of the second stage. In addition, it should be noted that sometimes the second stage can begin, as if bypassing the first. The defeat of the nail plate will start not from the edge, but at the base of the nail. Recovery from nail fungus in the second stage will be more problematic than in the first.

How to identify nail fungus in stage 3? In medicine it is called a sponge with a white surface and it seems that the whole plate is affected. It has a thick white color, it crumbles strongly at the edges.

The fourth stage is called total dystrophic fungus. The nail has a yellowish-gray color, emits a particularly unpleasant odor and crumbles heavily. In the fourth stage, you can often see the exposed part of the skin under the broken nail, as it has grown due to the fungus, in most cases it breaks off.

The reason for contacting a dermatologist is often the independent identification of the fourth stage of nail fungus. Don’t look on forums or the internet for advice on how to effectively treat nail fungus. It is better to consult a specialist at the first symptoms of the disease.

How Does A Nail Fungus Start

Nail fungus infection is a common dermatological disorder that begins either under the nail or in the nail itself. It is mostly caused by a dermatophyte fungus, though there are cases that it is caused by Candida yeast as well. Also called onychomycosis, the condition affects both fingernails and toenails, though it is more prevalent in toenails. Fungi thrive in warm and moist environments, which perhaps describe a lot of footwear. Nail fungus infection can also start with the same dermatophyte fungus that causes athletes foot, the Trichophyton. So when a person has athletes foot, its also likely that the fungal infection would spread to the nails.

Fungal infection gives nails an abnormal appearance. The first sign of it may be a discolored dot on the nail or the skin under the nail. There may be white or yellow streaks on the nail, a crumbling corner or tip of the nail, flaking on the nails surface, yellow spots at the bottom of the nail, and scaling under the nail. The infected nail may also be thickened or brittle, and it may detach from the nail bed. In some cases, there may also be odor coming from the infected nail.

Recognize Nail Fungus In The Early Stages

An infection should be treated early as soon as the first symptoms of nail fungus can be recognized.

If you are not sure whether it is nail fungus, you should consult a doctor. When treating nail fungus, you shouldnt lose any time, as it is very tedious.

A healthy fingernail or toenail is light pink and shiny, the nails surface is smooth, and the shape is even.

The nail fungus attacks the nail and feeds on the keratin of the nail. For this reason, one of the first signs is a slight change in the color of the nail .

Most of the time, the person concerned hardly perceives any symptoms or pain.

The nail often loses its typical shine at the beginning of the infection and becomes dull.

The picture above shows the typical course of onychomycosis very well.

In the initial stage, the fungal nail infection often begins on the front or side of the nail and spreads from there towards the middle towards the nail root.

How to Treat Toenail Fungus CORRECTLY | Easy Steps (2021)

Several health conditions can affect the appearance of your toenails and may be mistaken for toenail fungus.

Psoriasis Psoriasis can cause red, scaly patches on the skin. More than half of people with skin psoriasis also have it on their nails. Toenails and fingernails affected by psoriasis may be thick, discolored, crumbly, or loose. Some people will have nail changes with psoriasis, and if it affects the matrix , then these changes are permanent, says Sheth.

Skin Cancer A discolored spot underneath a toenail may be a sign of melanoma, a potentially fatal form of skin cancer. Melanoma under a toenail usually looks like a brown or black streak or may appear similar to a bruise. Although this isnt common, its also not rare, says Sheth. Her advice: Its always good to check it out.

Darier Disease This genetic disorder typically causes yellowish, wartlike blemishes on the body. However, some people with Darier disease also have fingernail or toenail irregularities, such as nails that are marked with red and white streaks, according to Genetics Home Reference. Sheth notes, however, that shes never had a biopsy come back with a diagnosis of Darier disease.

The Initial Causes How To Identify Nail Fungus

If you suspect that your nails are infected with fungus, it is best to consult your doctor and get a diagnosis. Your doctor will ask you about the symptoms and conduct a thorough examination of your nails. A biopsy is required to determine the cause of the infection. Various types of fungus are found in the skin, including the toenails. Among the most common forms of nail fungus are yellow and black, with white patches surrounded by dark brown or white spots.

Recognizing The Symptoms Of An Ingrown Toenail

  • 1Be aware of the difference between an ingrown toenail and foot fungus. Ingrown toenails are also known as onychocryptosis, and can be caused by stubbing your toe, wearing socks or shoes that are too tight, and cutting your toenails incorrectly. But ingrown toenails can also be caused by a toenail fungus called onychomycosis, which can then cause your toenail to grow abnormally and become ingrown.
  • However, foot fungus like athlete’s foot can cause your toenail to look discolored and become disfigured. Your toenail may appear spotted with white pits, there may be yellow debris under your toenail, or your toenail may appear chalky and irregularly shaped.
  • Another foot condition that causes nail disfigurement is the development of eczema or psoriasis on your nails. If you have this skin disorder, your nail may start to peel or split and appear thicker or begin to ripple. Your doctor can run a test to determine if you have a skin disorder that is causing toenail disfigurement.
  • If your toenail turns black, this may be due to trauma where you dropped something heavy on the nail. But it can also be due to melanoma or skin cancer. If your toenail turns black without any trauma inflicted on it, you should see your doctor right away.
  • If there is a yellowish discharge from your nail, your toenail may be crusty around this area.
  • The toenail feels increasingly painful, and very tender and swollen
  • There is pus or yellow discharge visible under the skin or the nail
