Does Vicks Help Toenail Fungus

Is There Any Scientific Evidence

Why You SHOULD NOT use Vicks Vaporub For Toenail Fungus. (Here’s What I’ve Learned.)

Since we have claimed that Vicks VapoRub could be effective as a treatment for toenail fungus, lets take a look at the scientific proof. Although research in this area is limited, the studies that have been performed produced encouraging results.

  • A study published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine reported that 83% of participants showed positive signs to the treatment. Five patients were completely cured, and 10 showed partial relief while only three people showed no change. Vicks was applied daily over a period of 48 weeks.

The conclusion was that Vicks VapoRub seems to have a positive clinical effect on the treatment of onychomycosis. However, given there were only 18 participants, the study is not considered as conclusive proof the findings are accurate.

  • In 2016, the Journal of the Association of Nurses in Aids Care also tested Vicks on HIV Aids patients that were suffering from nail fungus. Onychomycosis is common in Aids patients on account of a weak immune system which puts them at risk of serious side effects when taking pharmaceutical treatments such as Lamisil and Sporanox.

Again, the study only involved 18 participants. Vicks treatment was administered over a period of 24 weeks. Fifteen patients experienced improvement and did not suffer from any side effects.

Pros And Cons Of Vicks Vaporub For Toenail Fungus

It does seem that a number of people have found some relief from this difficult problem by using Vicks. On the plus side, it has minimal side effects relative to the traditional treatment methods and is a product that is both easy to find and inexpensive to buy.

However, Vicks has been shown to be ineffective for the majority of people even when used for extended periods of time and the longer you use any treatment, the more costly it becomes. Some individuals have found that it irritates the skin surrounding the nail and are bothered by the strong smell. It seems that even in the best of circumstances, treating toenail fungus with Vicks is just a temporary stop gap as the infection generally returns once the treatment has been stopped. The bottom line is that like all home remedies, it is wise to proceed with a healthy dose of caution and a little bit of common sense when considering Vicks Vapor Rub for the treatment of toenail fungus.

Dr Gott: Here’s The Rub On Using Vicks For Nail Fungus

  • DR. PETER GOTT, M.D. Newspaper Enterprise Association

Dear Dr. Gott: I am an avid reader of your column, primarily because you present so many remedies that do not advocate drugs for ordinary problems.

I am particularly interested in solving the problem of toenail fungus, and see that people have said that Vicks will help. Could you tell me exactly where you put the Vicks — on top of the nail, or under? Would it make any difference if the nail had polish? I imagine many women would like to know if nail polish interferes with the action of the Vicks. I usually keep my toenails polished so that the fungus is not apparent.

Dear Reader: Apply Vicks VapoRub to the nail, cuticle and surrounding tissue twice daily, rubbed in well, after having trimmed the infected nail as extensively as possible to reduce the “biomass” of the fun gus. You need not apply the Vicks under the nail, because there will, literally, be no “under the nail ” you have restricted that as much as possible.

Once you see normal nail growing out , continue to remove or trim infected nails, and apply the Vicks twice daily.

Although significant positive ef fects may take a year or more to appear , be patient. Keep telling yourself that 1) You have had nail fungus for years, so it may take years of therapy to cure it and 2) Vicks is so inexpensive that what have you got to lose?

Nonetheless, VapoRub does, unquestionably, in many people, provide a reasonable option for nail fungus that is safe and inexpensive.

Yes, you read that correctly. Vicks VapoRub is often mentioned as an effective nail fungus treatment because of both the active and inactive ingredients it contains. says Dr. Stern. Thymol, menthol, camphor, and oil of eucalyptus have shown efficacy against dermatophytes in a lab setting, she explains. The caveat? If youre using this regularly and not seeing any improvement after two months for fingernails or four months for toenails, see a dermatologist, she advises.

Penetrating The Nail Bed:

As you have correctly pointed out, getting anti-fungal ingredients under the nail is challenging. You cannot lift the nail without causing serious harm. Long soaks though, appear to allow enough penetration to begin the assault on nasty nail fungus.

As our readers above have noted, patience is the critical ingredient. We have found this to be true for ourselves. Reading a book for half an hour or watching television while you soak your tootsies once a day is a great start. But it could take anywhere from six to nine months to see the nails growing out pink and healthy.

Toenail Fungus: Symptoms And Causes

If one or more of your nails are infected with fungus, you may have nail fungus.

  • Thickened
  • Discoloration ranging from whitish to yellow-brown
  • Brittle, crumbly, or ragged is a term used to describe something brittle,
  • The shape has been distorted
  • A dark tint that results from dirt accumulating under your nail.
  • Having a slightly unpleasant odor
  • Nail fungus can infect fingernails, although it affects toenails more frequently.

Various fungal species cause fungal nail infections . The most common cause is dermatophyte, a type of fungus. Yeast and molds can also infect the nails, causing infection.

People of any age can acquire a fungus nail infection, but it is more common among the elderly. The nail might become brittle and dry as it gets older. Fungi can infiltrate through the breaks in the nails as a result of this. Other factors, such as poor blood circulation in the feet and a weaker immune system, could also be involved. Athletes feet can cause toenail fungal infection, which can spread from one nail to the next. However, contracting an infection from someone else is uncommon.

So Is It True Or Just A Myth

WILL VICKâS VAPORUB KILL TOENAIL FUNGUS!?

No, it is not a myth, Vicks VapoRub may help, though not as much as one may expect.

It is not a replacement for anti fungal therapy. It is also not what the product was designed for.

But it is something that may help in few cases, as no toenail fungal infections are same.

All three main components of Vicks are known to have some degree of antimicrobial activity, along with anti-inflammatory properties.

    Clinical Trial With Vicks Vaporub

A clinical trial published in the February 2011 The Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine suggests that VapoRub may be effective in treating some cases of toenail fungus 4. In this study, 18 participants were treated with Vicks VapoRub and followed over 48 weeks. Five of study participants experienced a cure and 10 had improvement of their symptoms. Cultures of the toenails before and after treatment verified that the fungus had been eradicated in those who were cured. Of the 5 people with a cure, only 2 species of fungus were identified Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Candida parapsilosis. This suggests that treatment effectiveness may depend on the specific type of fungus present. As of the time of publication, there have been no other published clinical studies to support or refute these data.

How To Use Vicks Vapor Rub Cure Toenail Fungus

Jen says Listerine and vinegar are her go-to solution:

I used tea tree oil faithfully for several years with some improvement. Also oregano oil, recommended as stronger than tea tree oil and quite expensive. Again, some improvement. I tried the Vicks with socks at night, but I dont like sleeping with socks.

Then I began one hour per week of soaking in water with lots of white vinegar. I had immediate success the fungus cleared almost completely and quickly.

Since then I have continued the weekly soaks with vinegar and the amber Listerine and no water one hour while sitting at the computer. I wonder if there is more than one kind of fungus since the tea tree oil was only somewhat successful, while the vinegar was much better for me. If there is more than one kind of fungus, that would explain why different strokes for different folks seems to be a key factor.

Incidentally, the weeds in my garden do not like vinegar so I just dump my used soaking mixture there I have lots of weeds to use it on! And it works.

We have lost count of the number of people who insist that when all else fails, white vinegar and Listerine foot soaks do the job. We are not surprised. Listerine has a good dose of alcohol and other ingredients that attack fungi.

Vinegar also makes the environment inhospitable to fungi. It does take the kind of patience that Jen describes to work the magic.

Researchers have been studying the effects of the herb, thyme, on curing toenail fungusa condition that, while not normally harmful, eats up an expectedly large portion of Americans medical bills every year. Over-the-counter medications for eliminating nail fungus are plagued with drawbacks: Theyre expensive, dont have great results, and have a whole slew of side effects. Heres what The New York Times had to say in 2009 about the research surrounding the use of herbal remedies such as thyme to treat dermatophytesa common type of fungi that humans contract from contact with other humans, animals, and soil.

In one study, scientists tested the antifungal effects of the ingredients in a generic medicated chest rub. Of the seven ingredients, thymol was among the most effective at inhibiting the growth of dermatophytes that cause nail fungus. Other studies in animals have also shown thymol oil to be effective against dermatophytes. And studies have also shown that thymol oil destroys another cause of nail fungus, Candida, by disrupting its cell membranes and metabolism.

The Right Way To Use Vicks Vaporub for Toenail Fungus – Toenail Fungus Cure

From times past, many people have successfully used Vicks VapoRub to treat toenail fungus while other people were not successful in using the treatment for their toenail fungus.

This is not alarming as some pretty costly over the counter prescription also does not work for everyone in treating toenail fungus. Also, when you consider that many people do take antifungal medicine for months without a positive change, it is not alarming. Even though they could get relief for a couple of months, the infection might return after a while

This point to the fact that toenail fungus comes in varieties. Another cause also might be the variables present in the carriers body such as the level of immune system and hygiene. Also, we suspect that these fungi pathogens come are many.

It might be surprising to know that some people also walk barefoot in the shower or gym. These sets of people, yet, do not get nail fungus while others will have a thick, ugly, yellowish-brown nail that might be difficult to clip.

This has puzzled researchers, and there are two speculations. Whether the immune system plays a vital role in helping against the toenail fungus, or there are different kinds of fungi.

The good news is that many people have successfully used Vicks VapoRub to treat toenail fungus. It, however, does not work for others. As a result, we cannot base its effectiveness on the success story of a couple of people.
