The History Of Absorbine

TOENAIL CUTTING OF A LONG NAIL – 2 YEARS WITHOUT CUTTING HIS TOENAILS!!!

W.F.Young, Inc., makers of Absorbine, was established in 1892. Absorbine Veterinary Liniment, W.F.Y.s first product, was invented by Mary Ida and Wilbur F. Young. The two were living in Connecticut just before the turn of last the century. Wilbur delivered cargo with a wagon and a team of horses. Mary Ida was an avid horse enthusiast and cared for all of their horses. Wilburs team of horses would get tired after long days of pulling freight and often would be too sore the next day to pull cargo as effectively.

Wilbur F. Young and his team

In those days, if a horse had stiffness or soreness, a common procedure was to blister the skin using an acidic or otherwise caustic agent. The blistered skin would cause blood to flood the area, speeding recovery of the muscles and connective tissues underneath. This was a harsh measure and often very uncomfortable for the horse. It would also necessitate two to three days of recovery. Mary Ida and Wilbur disapproved of this practice. Mary Ida decided there must be a smarter, more humane way. She then took special care to formulate a time honored blend of aromatic and essential oils that remain a family secret to this day. They named it Absorbine Liniment.

What Is The White Hard Stuff Under My Toenails

Nail psoriasis sometimes causes too much keratin to grow under the nail. This overgrowth is called subungual hyperkeratosis. People with hyperkeratosis may notice a white, chalky substance under the nail. When this occurs in the toenails, the pressure of shoes pushing down on the nails might cause pain.

Throwback – Simple Toenail Cutting, Neuropathy and Chemotherapy

Its that time of year. Your bodys natural reaction to heat and humidity is to sweat because when moisture evaporates it cools the skin.

Theres one place, however, where sweat cant evaporate easily. Inside socks and shoes, feet can get quite damp. That provides a hospitable environment for fungus. Athletes foot is a common fungal infection of the skin between the toes or on the soles of the feet.

Usually athletes foot is considered a simple condition to be treated with over the counter anti-fungal medicines. But not everyone gets relief from the itching and peeling. Some readers have found unusual ways to treat recurrent problems.

We heard this from one person:

Not everyone benefits from Absorbine jr. We heard this from a physician:

Beat Athletes Foot Without Over

Athletes foot fungus can often be difficult to treat. Over-the-counter medications are available, but for some people they fail to eliminate the problem. For that reason many people turn to somewhat unusual home remedies to cure them of their infections.

Absorbine Jr., a menthol-based pain reliever, is harsh on the skin, but many individuals claim that its highly potent for treating athletes foot fungus. A vinegar soak can also do fungal feet a lot of good. Odor and itchiness can be reduced by regularly submerging the feet in vinegar for a few minutes a day.

These unconventional methods can often be very useful for dealing with athletes foot, but the best care for a fungal infection can definitely be obtained by visiting a doctor. If you have athletes foot, contact podiatrist Dr. Stephen A. Kinard, DPM of The Foot and Ankle Associates of North Carolina, PLLC. Dr. Kinard can get you the care you need for your condition and help you figure out the reason why your infection developed in the first place.

Transmission From Person To Person

Athlete’s foot is caused by a parasitic fungus and is a communicable disease. It is typically transmitted in moist environments where people walk barefoot, such as showers, bath houses, and locker rooms. It can also be transmitted by sharing footwear with an infected person, or less commonly, by sharing towels with an infected person.

Symptoms Of Toenail Fungus

Identifying a toenail fungus in due time is vital in deciding its course of treatment. In the case where the infection has spread fully inside the toenails, homemade remedies will no longer suffice. You should consult your doctor immediately if the infection has grown beyond the normal harmless state.

Here are some common symptoms you can check for while identifying a toenail fungus:

  • The nail becomes brittle and breaks easily.
  • The surface of the nail may feel dry and powdery.
  • Splitting and crumbling of the nail.
  • The nail turns white, brown, yellow, or any other discoloration.
  • Debris built-up under the nail.
  • The fungus causes the nail to lift so that it is no longer firmly attached to the skin.
  • Nails may become thick and turn brown or yellow.

Why Does My Nail Fungus Keep Coming Back

A fungal infection starts out small enough usually a white or yellow spot appears on your toenail. All too soon, your entire nail is consumed by the fungus and your neighboring nails become infected, too. This leaves you with crumbling and unsightly toenails that youre forced to hide. These types of infections are notoriously difficult to get rid of, but not impossible, especially if you get the right treatment.

At Neuhaus Foot and Ankle, our team of foot health experts knows all too well how difficult it is to fight toenail fungus once it takes hold. Yet, with the right medical care, as well as patience on your part, we can not only prevail in your current battle against toenail fungus, we can prevent it from recurring in the future.

What Are The Risk Factors For Toenail Onychomycosis

The most prevalent predisposing risk factor for developing onychomycosis is advanced age, which is reported to be 18.2% in patients 6079 years of age, compared to 0.7% in patients younger than 19 years of age. Further, men are up to three times more likely to have onychomycosis than women, though the reasons for this gender difference are not clear . Moreover, the low prevalence of infection in people whose spouses have onychomycosis compared to the prevalence among their children suggests a genetic risk factor . Though extremely rare, one study reported four family members from seven unrelated groups with a common genetic trait who developed a dermatophyte infection of deep tissues that proved fatal .

Other risk factors include diabetes and conditions contributing to poor peripheral circulation . In fact, onychomycosis may represent an important predictor for the development of diabetic foot syndrome and foot ulcers . Patients who are immunosuppressed, such as those with HIV infection and those undergoing cancer therapy, are also predisposed to fungal nail infection . There is at least one case report of a toenail infection caused by Fusarium that developed into a fatal systemic infection in a lymphoma patient following a bone marrow transplant .

Whats New In Onychomycosis Therapy

Recent device-based therapies for onychomycosis include laser devices, photodynamic therapy, iontophoresis, and ultrasound. Laser treatment has been approved for cosmetic treatment only, but efficacy as a treatment to eradicate the fungal infection will have to be determined by additional randomized controlled trials . There have been rare reports of onychomycosis cures following the use of phototherapy, which involves the irradiation of accumulated protoporphyrin within the fungal hyphae, leading to subsequent hyphal cell damage . The ability of iontophoresis, or the use of electric current to facilitate the passage of drug through the nail plate, has been proven in studies with human cadaver nails, but relevant clinical studies remain to be conducted . Finally, though ultrasound therapy has preliminarily demonstrated fungistatic activity against nail infections , the device itself seems overly complicated, with ultrasound transducers and drug delivery compartments needed above each toenail and the requirement for a computer software interface, making it a physician-officeonly treatment and likely very expensive .

How Does Pact Work

PACT kills fungi by causing severe oxidative damage to fungal cells. Light photons of a specific wavelength interact with intracellular photosensitizing molecules that are applied as a dye to the cell wall of fungal cells. This dye is harmless to human cells but makes the fungal cells hypersensitive to a specific wavelength of light.

Once the light absorbs into the tissue and interacts with photosensitive molecules in the dye, this interaction causes the production of free radicals, which cause irreversible cellular damage in the targeted fungal cellsbut pose no danger to human cells.

As an antifungal, PACT is considered an emerging science. Most research has focused on lasers however, high-powered LED light sources offer the necessary light power output to ensure enough light photons will absorb into the toenail as well as the tissue around and under it.

A 2004 study of nine patients with a condition known as interdigital mycosis, which is infections between the toes caused by dermatophytes, yeasts, or bacteria, revealed that topical delivery of a specific acid called 5aminolevulinic acid, along with red light, led to recovery in six out of nine patients after one to four treatments. Since there were no follow-up treatments, researchers noted the recurrence of infection after four weeks in fewer than half of the patients.
