Can Vitamin C Kill Fungus

Pathogenic = Mold Hyphae Fungus Filamentous Growth Virulent Candida The Mycelium Form

Ask Dr. Nandi: Fact check: Could taking vitamin C cure or prevent COVID-19?

There is yeast, there is the pseudohyphae form, and theres the hyphae state. The yeast form of Candida is ovoid-shaped . The hyphae form, , is what causes the big problems, but the yeast form of Candida is believed to play an important role in the spread of Candida. Then there is the pseudohyphae form, which is not very well understood, other than being an intermediate form between yeast and hyphae. Differences in pH, temperature changes, carbon dioxide levels, and starvation, as well as other complex feedback loops, can trigger yeast to convert to the hyphae form.

Candida can change back and forth between its different forms depending on its needs at any given time, which is one of the many reasons it is able to adapt and survive in such a wide variety of conditions.

Vitamin B3 As A Novel Approach To Treat Fungal Infections

University of Montreal
Scientists have identified vitamin B3 as a potential antifungal treatment. Infections by the yeast Candida albicans represent a significant public health problem and a common complication in immunodeficient individuals such as AIDS patients, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and recipients of organ transplants.

A team of scientists from the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer of the University of Montreal have identified vitamin B3 as a potential antifungal treatment.

Led by IRIC Principal Investigators Martine Raymond, Alain Verreault and Pierre Thibault, in collaboration with Alaka Mullick, from the Biotechnology Research Institute of the National Research Council Canada, the study is the subject of a recent article in Nature Medicine.

Infections by the yeast Candida albicans represent a significant public health problem and a common complication in immunodeficient individuals such as AIDS patients, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and recipients of organ transplants. While some treatments are available, their efficacy can be compromised by the emergence of drug-resistant strains.

Marginally Low Vitamin C Status Might Lead To Benefits Of Supplementation

It seems evident that any effects of vitamin C supplementation may be more prominent when the baseline vitamin C level is particularly low. As noted above, a profound vitamin C deficiency was associated with pneumonia in the early literature. It seems plausible that less severe vitamin C deficiency, which may be called marginal vitamin C deficiency, can also be associated with increased risk and severity of infections, although the effects may be less pronounced than those caused by scurvy.

Low vitamin C levels are not just of historical relevance. Cases of scurvy in hospitals have been described in several recent case reports . One survey estimated that about 10% of hospitalized elderly patients had scurvy . Surveys have also shown that plasma vitamin C levels below 11 µmol/L were found for 14% of males and 10% of females in the USA, 19% of males and 13% of females in India, 40% of elderly people living in institutions in the UK, 23% of children and 39% of women in Mexico, and 79%93% of men in Western Russia. Moreover, 45% of a cohort of pregnant women in rural India had plasma vitamin C levels below 4 µmol/L and the mean plasma vitamin C level fell to 10 µmol/L in a cohort of pregnant or lactating women in Gambian villages in the rainy season .

Impair The Effectiveness Of Niacin

Evidence suggests that taking vitamin C supplements may impair the bodys ability to increase high density lipoprotein cholesterol in people taking the combination drug niacin-simvastatin. This drug combines the vitamin niacin with the statin simvastatin , and people take it to treat high cholesterol.

Doctors consider HDL cholesterol the good cholesterol because it reduces the amount of harmful cholesterol in the blood.

If a person takes vitamin C supplements and niacin-simvastatin, they should talk to their doctor about ways to make each more effective. Doctors do not know whether vitamin C also affects the ability of other medicines similar to Zocor.

A persons body cannot make vitamin C, so people need to eat enough foods that contain vitamin C to meet their daily needs. If someone is at risk of a vitamin C deficiency, they can take vitamin C supplements.

The advise aiming for the following RDA of vitamin C each day:

90 mg 75 mg

People who smoke should take 35 mg more vitamin C per day than those who do not smoke.

During pregnancy or when breastfeeding, women should get the following levels of vitamin C per day:

  • 1418 years: 80 mg during pregnancy and 115 mg when breastfeeding
  • 19 years and older: 85 mg during pregnancy and 120 mg when breastfeeding

There is not enough research to suggest an RDA for vitamin C in those younger than 1 year of age. As a result, the ODS provide an adequate intake, which is the amount that is likely to be sufficient:

How Are Candida Infections Diagnosed

10 Best Fungal Nail Treaments in 2020 Topical, Balms and ...

In order to diagnose candidiasis, your doctor will first take your medical history and ask you about your symptoms. They may also ask if you have any conditions or medications that could lead to a weakened immune system, or if youve taken a course of antibiotics recently.

Many common cases of candidiasis can often be diagnosed through a physical examination.

If your doctor is uncertain if your symptoms are due to a Candida infection, they may take a sample from the affected area. This sample can then be used to culture the organism and to identify what species it is. For example, if candidemia is suspected, your doctor will collect a blood sample for testing.

Identifying the species of Candida thats causing your infection is also helpful because your doctor will be able to prescribe an antifungal medication that will be effective in treating that particular species.

If Candida albicans enter your bloodstream, they can cause serious infections not only in your blood but in other organs as well.

Early History On Vitamin C And Infections

Vitamin C was identified in the early twentieth century in the search for a substance, the deficiency of which would cause scurvy . Scurvy was associated with pneumonia in the early literature, which implies that the factor that cured scurvy might also have an effect on pneumonia.

Alfred Hess summarized a series of autopsy findings as follows: pneumonia, lobular or lobar, is one of the most frequent complications and causes of death and secondary pneumonias, usually broncho-pneumonic in type, are of common occurrence and in many epidemics constitute the prevailing cause of death . He later commented that in infantile scurvy … a lack of the antiscorbutic factor which leads to scurvy, at the same time predisposes to infections … Similar susceptibility to infections goes hand in hand with adult scurvy . In the early 1900s, Casimir Funk, who coined the word vitamin, noted that an epidemic of pneumonia in the Sudan disappeared when antiscorbutic treatment was given to the numerous cases of scurvy that appeared at about the same time .

Early literature on vitamin C and infections was reviewed by Clausen , Robertson , and Perla and Marmorston . Those reviews are thorough descriptions of the large number of early studies on the topic of this review. Scanned versions of those reviews and English translations of many non-English papers cited in this review are available at the home page of this author . The book on scurvy by Hess is available in a digitized format .

Vitamin C May Decrease Common Cold Incidence In Special Conditions

Vitamin C halved the incidence of colds in five RCTs during which the participants were under heavy short-term physical activity . Three of the studies used marathon runners in South Africa as subjects, whereas one study used Canadian military personnel on winter exercise, and the fifth study was on schoolchildren in a skiing camp in the Swiss Alps, i.e., the Ritzel trial . Thus, three studies were conducted under conditions of a hot environment and profound physical stress and the other two were carried out under cold environments and physical stress .

Another group in which vitamin C has prevented colds is British men . Four trials found that vitamin C decreased the incidence of colds by 30%, and in another set of four trials, the proportion of men who had recurrent common cold infections during the study decreased by a mean of 46%. All these studies were carried out in the 1970s or earlier, and according to surveys, the intake of vitamin C in the United Kingdom was low when the studies were carried out, 0.03 to 0.06 g/day, and three of the U.K. trials specifically estimated that the dietary vitamin C intake was between 0.015 to 0.05 g/day . In particular, Baird administered only 0.08 g/day of vitamin C yet they observed 37% lower incidence of colds in the vitamin C group, indicating that it was the marginal deficiency and not a high dose that explained the benefit .

Types Of Sinus Infections

Sinus infections are classified into different types depending on the onset and duration of symptoms. An acute sinus infection is temporary and usually begins with a common cold or seasonal allergies. Acute sinusitis usually lasts fewer than 4 weeks. Subacute sinus infections last 4 to 12 weeks.

Chronic sinusitis is an inflammatory disease that lasts longer than 12 weeks despite treatment . Recurrent sinusitis occurs several times a year.

Why Do Some People Get Oral Thrush

Over 8,800 Black Fungus Cases Reported In India, Centre Ramps Up Amphotericin-B Production

The Candida fungi live in most peoples mouths in small amounts and are a part of normal oral microflora . In low numbers these fungi are usually harmless. But in certain conditions they can multiply, causing an overgrowth that can trigger oral thrush symptoms. This can happen in the following situations:

  • If youre taking antibiotics the antibiotics kill both harmful and harmless bacteria in your mouth but not Candida, which can multiply more easily when bacteria levels are low.

  • If you wear dentures . The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence states around 50 – 70 per cent of denture wearers are predisposed to oral thrush infection .

  • If you use steroid inhalers or take steroid tablets.

  • If you have a persistently dry mouth .

  • If you have Sjogrens syndrome, which can cause dry mouth.

  • If you have diabetes.

  • If you have problems with your immune system .

  • If you have severe anaemia or are deficient in iron, folate or vitamin B12.

  • If you smoke ).

  • If you have generally poor health or are frail ).

  • If you use antibacterial mouthwash excessively.

In healthy adults, however, oral thrush isnt common. Meanwhile, if you have symptoms including white patches on the tongue or inside of your cheeks it could be a sign of another problem, such as:

D3 Reduces Candida Fungal Burden But Not At High Dose

In the following experiments, we assessed whether vitamin D might influence susceptibility to Candida infection in vivo. Over a treatment range of 0.0011 g/kg, Candida-infected mice that received 0.01 or 0.1 g/kg of Calcijex had significantly decreased kidney fungal burden, compared with untreated mice . The weight loss trends mirrored that of fungal burden in the lower-dose vitamin D3treated mice . On the other hand, mice that received high dose of Calcijex had increased Candida growth. Findings in histological sections of the mouse kidneys corresponded to the CFUs obtained through cultures. There were fewer germinating yeast in mice treated with 0.01 or 0.1 µg/kg of Calcijex . In terms of overall survival , Candida-infected mice that received 3 daily doses of 1,252D3 had increased survival, compared with untreated mice . The administration of daily doses of vitamin D3 did not confer an additional survival benefit, compared with the 3-day Calcijex regimen described above at the same dose . Not unexpectedly, mice given a high dose of Calcijex showed poor survival, consistent with the increased fungal burden observed.

Neutropenia A Key Risk Factor

An important risk factor for developing more invasive Candida conditions is neutropenia. This is when there are abnormally low levels of cells called neutrophils in your blood. It can make you more prone to infections.

People that are commonly affected by neutropenia include people undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer, and people with leukemia or other bone marrow diseases.

Individuals that have neutropenia and an invasive Candida infection have different treatment recommendations.

What Can A Doctor Prescribe For Yeast Infections

Over-the-counter antifungal medications treat yeast infections and are available in creams or suppositories for internal application. Yeast infections can last three days to two weeks, so there are one-day, three-day, or week-long treatments available.

There are also anti-itch antifungal creams that come along with most treatments to help external itching. The most popular brands of antifungal creams to treat vaginal yeast infections are Monistat or Vagistat. These treatments are also available online for those who are uncomfortable buying them in the store.

A healthcare provider may prescribe Diflucan fluconazole a tablet that will treat fungal vaginal infections, or a prescription antifungal such as terconazole , which is inserted internally at bedtime.

Nasal Spray And Mouth Spray

New Roots Candida Stop 180 Capsules

Nasal and mouth sprays can be great tools to support the immune system. Most sprays you find in the store are filled with synthetic chemicals that only cover up symptoms. Finding a natural spray that features antimicrobial and decongesting compounds will likely much more helpful.

Grapefruit seed extract is an extremely potent natural remedy that can effectively fight sinus infections. Grapefruit seed extract is made from the pulp and seeds of the grapefruit. It has antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. It also has high vitamin C content and other healing nutrients to help the body fight a sinus infection and relieve congestion.

Castor oil has many useful healing properties. It can help with lymphatic circulation which alleviates blockages and infections. Slippery elm has powerful anti-inflammatory abilities and many other healing properties. Using nasal and mouth sprays with these powerful ingredients can be very helpful for supporting overall sinus health. You can find one of my favorite sprays for this here.

Additionally, colloidal silver can be highly effective as it is a natural anti-microbial that is most effective against bacterial infections but does help with viral and fungal as well. This silver spray here is a great product to use to support sinus and respiratory health. Remember, it is not FDA approved to prevent, mitigate, treat or cure sinus infections and should not be interpreted as such.

Moringa Essential Oil For Athletes Foot

In a 2007 study, scientists measured the antifungal activity of Moringa oleifera oil, popularly sold as moringa essential oil. Trichophyton mentagrophytes and other dermatophytes were incubated along with moringa essential oil or a common antifungal drug, ketoconazole.

Scientists concluded that moringa essential oil demonstrated significant antifungal activity, and has potential to be a natural, anti-dermatophyte treatment, although more research is required.8

While there may be several benefits to using moringa essential oil, nail fungus and athletes foot treatments are among the most prominent. To create your own sweet-smelling foot treatment, in a bowl combine 4 Tbsp. of a carrier oil and 2 Tbsp. of aloe vera gel with 2 Tsp. of moringa essential oil and lavender essential oil each. Gently massage the mixture into the affected area and let sit for several minutes. Use up to twice a day.

I started my journey with essential oils about 2 years ago after the birth of my first child. To say that they changed my life forever would be an understatement. I share my story with you, so you can thrive and change your life, like it has done for me.
