Patient information: A handout on this topic is available at .

Intertrigo is caused by cutaneous inflammation of opposing skin surfaces. It is more common in hot and humid environments and during the summer. Skin folds, including inframammary , intergluteal, axillary, and interdigital areas, may be involved.1 Intertrigo is more common in young and older persons secondary to a weakened immune system, incontinence, and immobility, although it can occur at any age.24

SORT: KEY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Intertrigo associated with Candida should be managed with topical antifungals applied twice daily until the rash resolves.

Clinical recommendation Evidence rating References

Fluconazole , 100 to 200 mg daily for seven days, is used for intertrigo complicated by a resistant fungal infection. Patients who are obese may require an increased dosage.

Skin barrier protectants, such as zinc oxide ointment and petrolatum, as part of a structured skin care routine that also includes gentle cleansing and moisturizing may reduce recurrent intertrigo infections.

Here are 10 questions you can use to understand fungal infections and know what you need to do to stay healthy.

Fungi are everywhere. Sometimes, they are too small to see with the naked eye. Fungi can live outdoors in soil and on plants indoors on surfaces and in the air and on peoples skin and inside the body. There are millions of fungal species, but only a few hundred of them can make people sick.

Mild fungal skin infections can look like a rash and are very common. For example, ringworm is a skin infection caused by a fungusnot a worm! Fungal infections in the lungs can be more serious and often cause symptoms that are similar to other illnesses, such as bacterial pneumonia or tuberculosis. Because of this, proper diagnosis and treatment are often delayed. Fungal infections like meningitis and bloodstream infections, are less common than skin and lung infections but can be life-threatening.

The more you know about fungal infections and your chances of getting one, the better you can protect your health.

The Mental Burden Of Skin Flakes In Psoriasis And Psoriatic Arthritis

You dont need a medical study to tell you that scaling and flaking is bothersome, but the evidence exists nonetheless: 65 percent of patients rank flaking, peeling, and shedding on their body as one of the top three most distressing symptoms they experience, per research published in The Journal of Dermatological Treatment.

The problem with any skin disease is that its on the outside. You have to deal with how the world is interacting with you and your skin disease. It can cause a lot of pain and suffering, says Amy Wechsler, MD, who is board-certified in both dermatology and psychiatry and author of the book The Mind-Beauty Connection. For instance, if psoriasis flakes are on your hands, you may be worried about shaking hands in work or social settings to say hello.

The challenge then becomes controlling and responding to flares, cleaning up flakes, and explaining them to friends, colleagues, and loved ones. Generally, the more widespread the disease, or the more difficult it is to cover up, the greater the effect it has on quality of life, says Dr. Bressack.

Not Every Remedy For Toenail Fungus Works For Everyone

For a number of years, I had dealt with both big toenails being discolored, and so thick I could not cut them, even with large clippers. I had to soak my feet to soften the toenails and even then I had to get my husband had to cut them for me. Each time he always had trouble with the nails on the big toes. The nail salon where I had a pedicure did not fare any better. I did not have the money for a podiatrist so I decided to research home remedies. The four I found most recommended on the Internet were Vicks Vapor rub, Apple cider vinegar,Listerine mouthwash, and hydrogen peroxide.

I have tried each of these products separately as well as together many times. The original Listerine worked once, but not again. The other natural cures did not work for me at all. I continued to read online testimonies of their effectiveness, and I understood that not every Home Remedy is going to work for every person. I wondered, however, if there were one that would benefit my situation or if I had to make a trip to the podiatrist.

Fortunately, a few days later I noticed a bottle of Selsun Blue medicated shampoo in the bathroom. My son’s doctor had recommended it for his dry itchy scalp. I read the ingredients and on a whim decided to see if it would help me with the toenail fungus.

What Are Ketoconazole And Selenium Sulfide

Selenium sulfide is a chemical agent commonly used for treating dandruff. It is an antifungal agent that also relieves itching, flaking, scaling, and dry skin on the scalp due to dandruff. A Splotchy Tan Mean There’s A Fungus Among Us

If your first tan of the summer leaves you looking like you’ve got a bad case of mildew, you might have a condition known as Tinea versicolor.

Tinea versicolor is caused by a yeast-like fungus that lives in the outer layers of your skin. For most people, it doesn’t cause any problems . . . they may never even know it’s there. But for others, it can create small, oval-shaped spots and splotches on their backs, chests and upper arms.

Tinea versicolor can adorn the skin with a rainbow of different colors . On light skin, the spots often blend in, or they may appear as bronze, pink or reddish patches.

If you have dark skin, or if you’ve recently acquired a suntan, the fungus shows up as sharply outlined pale or white patches on your upper body, giving it a moth-eaten look.

Tinea versicolor isn’t really a disease. It’s normal to have the fungus that causes it living on your skin . . . 97 percent of the population does. Experts believe that people who are troubled most by the fungus have a certain type of skin oil that the fungus thrives on. This may explain why Tinea versicolor usually occurs after puberty. It’s common in teenagers and young adults, and rarely seen in elderly folk.

There’s no real cure for Tinea versicolor. Once you have the fungus that causes it, it’s almost impossible to eradicate. But you can keep the fungus from taking over your body, and, with a little extra effort, you can even rid yourself of the spots it leaves on your skin.

Are There Any Side Effects From Using A Coal Tar Shampoo

Although most people do not experience significant side effects, the WHO state that coal tar shampoos may cause skin irritation and on rare occasions allergic sensitization is possible. They also recommend that a coal tar shampoo should not be applied to inflamed, broken or infected skin.

Because coal tar can increase sensitivity to sunlight, skin treated with coal tar products should be protected from ultraviolet rays to avoid irritation and sunburn. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you protect your scalp from the sun by wearing a hat when outdoors and seeking shade whenever possible if you use a coal tar shampoo.

The same organization advises that tar shampoos can discolor blonde, grey or light-colored hair.

When Should You Contact Your Doctor

If you develop symptoms of tinea versicolor, you may choose to treat the condition yourself. Over-the-counter antifungal medications can eliminate discolored patches of skin. However, you should contact your doctor if these treatments arent effective. You may need a prescription medication to control your symptoms.

    How Is Tinea Versicolor Diagnosed

See your doctor if strangely colored patches develop on your skin and you cant treat them at home. Your doctor will examine your skin and may be able to tell if you have tinea versicolor just by looking at the patches.

If a diagnosis cant be made by looking at the skin, your doctor may take a skin scraping. A skin scraping removes cells from your skin for testing by scraping the skin gently. The cells are viewed under a microscope to see if they contain the yeast that causes this condition. Your doctor can conduct a potassium hydroxide microscopy. In this procedure, your doctor takes a skin sample, places it on a microscope slide with a solution of 20 percent KOH, and looks for yeast or hyphae fungi under a microscope.

Your doctor might also take a biopsy, or tissue sample, of the affected skin and test for fungi on the outer skin layer. A sample of the fungus on the skin can also be tested in a fungal culture to see if you have the condition.

Your doctor may also use a Woods lamp to look at your skin. This special machine, which uses ultraviolet light, is held 4 to 5 inches from your skin. If yeast is present, the affected skin will appear yellow or green under the light.
